Are Dental Groupon Deals A Deal?

January 14, 2012 / Ronald Widen / General

I am sure you have seen those Groupon deals for dental treatment! Are they really a deal?

Do you understand that when a dentist offers a $40 deal for a cleaning, exam and x-rays that Groupon gets $20 and the dentist gets $20. With that $20 the dentist has to pay himself or a hygienist for the time spent with the patient, pay for the supplies, pay overhead and pay to clean the room. That $20 does not go far. You better not have any sign of gingivitis or periodontal disease or they will charge you additionally to clean those areas. That is not covered in the Groupon deal. The dentist typically sells hundreds or thousands of these Groupon deals. How long do you think it will take them to see all those new patients? Remember these deals have a shelf life of 6 months. Furthermore, these deals may be illegal and unethical. I would think twice before purchasing a Groupon deal.

I totally agree. Groupon is not suited for dentistry.

How is Groupon able to sell those deals if they’re illegal?
